Over a chorus of churning guitars and swirling pedal steel, Hayes Peebles sings an unmistakable refrain: "I'm getting out of New York before the day I die." It's a sentiment that echoes throughout "The Great Escape EP," recorded only months before the New York-born crooner packed up and moved to Nashville.

Sonically, both of those cities are felt and heard in equal parts on a record that manages to chronicle placelessness, waiting, and the thrill of leaving things behind. "The Great Escape" is a brief and compelling musical autobiography that—by way of songcraft, melody, exceptional lyricism, and honesty—takes us all along for a ride.
